Nigeria’s former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has been arraigned before a court in Abuja on fresh charges of alleged financial misconduct. This comes on top of two previous sets of charges he is already facing.
The Allegations
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, accuses Emefiele of approving the printing of billions of naira in new currency without following proper procedure. The EFCC claims he bypassed the Central Bank Board and Presidential approval, which are required by law. This allegedly resulted in the printing of N375.5 million ₦1,000 notes, N172 million ₦500 notes, and N137 million ₦200 notes at a significantly inflated cost.
The EFCC also alleges that Emefiele illegally withdrew N124.8 billion from the government’s central revenue fund without proper authorization from the National Assembly.
Emefiele’s Defense
Emefiele has pleaded not guilty to all charges. His lawyer argued for bail, which was granted under strict conditions, including a ₦300 million surety and a ban on international travel without court permission.
The Naira Swap Controversy
These charges relate to the controversial naira redesign policy implemented under Emefiele’s leadership in 2022. The policy aimed to fight counterfeiting and corruption, but faced criticism for causing cash shortages and economic disruption.
Previous Charges
Emefiele is already facing separate charges of procurement fraud and allegedly approving a contract for vehicles without proper procedures. He has also pleaded not guilty to these charges.
What’s Next?
The trial for these new charges is scheduled to begin later this month. The outcome of this case, along with the other charges Emefiele faces, will be closely watched in Nigeria, with implications for the country’s financial system and political landscape.
