Former Sheffield United and Greece international defender George Baldock has died. He was 31 years old. Recently, in July, Baldock signed for Greek club Panathinaikos. He was found dead inside the swimming pool of his home in Glyfada, southern Athens.
As a family, we are in shock at this terrible loss,” said Baldock’s family in a statement.
Panathinaikos also expressed their pain thus: “Shocked by the loss of our George. The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death.” The Greece national team and Football Federation wrote, “There are no words to describe the pain caused by the loss of one of our own.”
Born in England, Baldock represented Greece at international level through his maternal grandmother, earning to date 12 caps since making his senior debut back in 2022. A highly regarded seven-year professional for Sheffield United, he played an integral part in leading the Blades back to the Premier League in the 2019/20 season. He made 205 appearances overall for the South Yorkshire-based club before this summer’s switch to Panathinaikos on a three-year deal.
Sheffield United also paid tribute, offering their condolences to Baldock’s family and friends, calling him “extremely popular with supporters, staff and teammates”.
