For years, Nigerian content creator Emmanuel Obruste, popularly known as GehGeh, built a strong online following by challenging conventional views about relationships and marriage. Through viral videos, livestreams and social media debates, he repeatedly argued that marriage was financially demanding and often discouraged young men from rushing into it.

That is why the internet stood still over the weekend when videos surfaced showing what appeared to be GehGeh participating in a traditional wedding ceremony.

The clips quickly dominated conversations across X, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, with thousands of Nigerians questioning whether one of the country’s most vocal critics of marriage had finally abandoned his long-held views.

Wedding videos spark nationwide debate

The controversy began after GehGeh uploaded several videos showing himself dressed in a richly embroidered burgundy agbada alongside a woman wearing matching traditional attire.

The pair appeared before guests in a setting that closely resembled a traditional marriage ceremony, complete with cultural rites and celebrations.

An invitation card visible in one of the clips identified the couple as Mary and Prosper, with the ceremony scheduled for July 26.

Another viral video showed the bride performing the traditional first-feeding rite, a symbolic moment during many Nigerian traditional weddings.

For many followers, the images were enough to conclude that GehGeh had secretly tied the knot despite years of preaching against marriage.

Within hours, the clips had generated thousands of comments, with social media users accusing the content creator of contradicting the very philosophy that made him famous.

A complete turnaround?

GehGeh has often described marriage as a financial burden, arguing that many men enter unions without properly understanding the responsibilities involved.

His videos frequently encouraged followers to prioritise financial independence before considering marriage.

On several occasions, he suggested that having children outside marriage was preferable to entering what he considered an expensive lifelong commitment.

Those comments earned him a loyal audience, with many young men describing themselves as members of what they jokingly called “GehGeh Marriage School.”

Because of those views, the wedding videos came as a major surprise.

Many followers wondered whether the outspoken influencer had experienced a genuine change of heart or whether the ceremony was simply another carefully planned social media stunt.

Adding to the mystery, GehGeh posted a cryptic caption alongside one of the videos.

“So I no fit represent my brother wey dey abroad?” he wrote.

Rather than ending the speculation, the statement only fuelled more debate.

Celebrity reactions pour in

The viral wedding clips also attracted reactions from several Nigerian entertainers and social media personalities, many of whom jokingly accused GehGeh of abandoning the lessons he had taught them.

Among the strongest reactions came from actress Evan Okoro, who expressed disbelief after seeing the videos.

Speaking in an Instagram video, she claimed GehGeh’s teachings had contributed to the collapse of her own marriage.

“Make una no tell me say this Gehgeh’s wedding video na true. Gehgeh talk say anytime wey we see am marry, make we know say na the woman use juju on him.

“Gehgeh don leave us for street now go marry.

“Na Gehgeh scatter my marriage. He tells us say marriage na financial mistake.

“Gehgeh don disappoint us for street now, wetin go happen to us now?

“He told us that marriage is a scam.

“Na Gehgeh teach me wetin I dey do.

“He deceive me.

“You scatter my marriage.”

Her emotional but humorous reaction quickly went viral, with many users describing it as one of the funniest responses to the controversy.

Popular blogger Tunde Ednut also joined the conversation with a brief but widely shared post.

“Wait oo! Is Gehgeh married?”

His question immediately attracted thousands of comments from fans trying to determine whether the ceremony was genuine.

Comedian Cute Abiola also reacted with disbelief.

Tagging GehGeh directly, he wrote:

“Are you serious or your joking?

“Just tell me what I’m seeing online is not true.

“This boy you nearly spoil my life one year ago.

“Do you know the number of boys that you have spoiled their lives?

“You now go and marry.

“This must be a prank.”

He later returned to the comment section under Tunde Ednut’s post, adding another humorous remark.

“Na God say make I don drop out from his school since.

“Thank God say I no turn single father.

“I am waiting for him to come online and explain in full details.”

Other personalities, including Salo, Tunde Perry, Izzy Ogbeide and Daddy Freeze, also weighed in, with many calling on GehGeh to explain whether he had truly changed his position on marriage.

GehGeh breaks his silence

As criticism continued to mount, GehGeh responded through his social media platforms.

Contrary to claims circulating online, he insisted that he had never directly advised people against marriage.

Instead, he challenged critics to provide evidence that he had ever made such a statement.

“I never for once told y’all not to get married.

“Did I?

“If yes, show me a video of me telling you not to marry.”

He also argued that many Nigerians misunderstand how content creation works, suggesting that people often confuse entertainment with personal beliefs.

“Nigerians really don’t understand how social media works.

“If you know how to use it properly, you will never lack.”

His comments, however, did little to end the debate.

Fans await the full story

Whether the ceremony was an actual wedding, a symbolic appearance, or content designed to generate engagement, one thing is clear—it has become one of the biggest talking points on Nigerian social media.

For years, GehGeh built a reputation by questioning marriage and encouraging financial independence before relationships.

Now, the same audience that embraced those opinions is demanding answers after seeing him dressed as a groom.

Until the content creator provides a detailed explanation, the mystery surrounding the viral wedding videos is likely to continue, with fans eagerly waiting to discover whether one of Nigeria’s loudest marriage critics has finally embraced the institution he spent years questioning.
