Boris Pistorius, the German Defence Minister has announced on Wednesday, July 28, that Germany is considering pulling its soldiers out of Mali quickly, in an ordered manner, on account of the scheduled end of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the country on June 30, 2023.
It is of note to mention that Germany has deployed about 1,000 troops to Mali, prior to the withdrawal, but is now withdrawing its troops.
The complete evacuation of its soldiers is expected to conclude by May 2024.
A few instances have led to the present Malian situation. The first had been when a military coup in 2020 had occurred. The last straw however, had been when the government invited fighters from the Wagner Group (a Kremlin-linked private military company) to help in its fight against insurgents.
Reports had also revealed that the German troop had faced escalating difficulties in recent months, one of which was continuously having to postpone reconnaissance patrols after being refused flyover rights by the ruling junta.
