An intense monsoon rain spell in Afghanistan led to catastrophic flooding, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 30 lives, according to a disaster ministry official’s statement on Sunday.
The floods wreaked havoc in Jalrez district, located 46 km (29 miles) east of Kabul, where 26 people lost their lives as hundreds of houses, predominantly constructed with earth, were washed away by the torrential rain.
In addition to the casualties in Jalrez, four more individuals perished in Kabul, with over 70 others sustaining injuries across both districts. Tragically, around 40 people remain missing, adding to the toll of the disaster.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the Afghan Taliban, expressed his condolences and called upon aid organizations and the Kabul administration to extend support to the grieving families.
