The recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has openly criticized the lawmakers’ decision to remove him from office. Speaking to a large crowd of supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge, 47, GRA Ikeja, Lagos, Obasa described the entire process as unconstitutional and insisted that proper procedures were not followed.
Obasa Denies Corruption Allegations
Obasa, in his first public statement since his removal, dismissed allegations of corruption leveled against him by the lawmakers. The former speaker described the accusations of financial misappropriation as “impossible,” firmly rejecting the claims.
“I am not disturbed; I am not afraid,” Obasa said, expressing confidence despite what he referred to as the questionable “developments that happened at the assembly.” His bold stance drew loud cheers from the crowd gathered at his residence to show their support.
Allegations or Power Play?
While the lawmakers cited corruption and financial misconduct as reasons for Obasa’s removal, some persons argue that the impeachment may have been influenced by power tussles and internal conflicts within the assembly. With supporters planning further rallies to express their discontent, the spotlight is now firmly on the assembly to justify its actions.
Obasa’s defiance and the public backing he continues to receive add an interesting twist to this political issue.
We are left wondering, was his impeachment truly about accountability, or does it reflect a deeper power struggle within Lagos politics?
