Arsenal struggled again on the road as the Gunners fell 1-0 to Inter Milan at the San Siro in the UEFA Champions League, now an abysmal one win in six on the road in all competitions. The early pressure from Inter paid off almost immediately when Denzel Dumfries’ curling effort thudded against the crossbar, then Hakan Çalhanoğlu missed by inches with a strong shot from distance.
The rhythm finally-picking-up Arsenal did see Bukayo Saka testing Yann Sommer, but just before halftime, Mikel Merino was punished for handball, allowing Çalhanoğlu to convert from the spot as his 19th consecutive penalty success to give Inter a deserved lead.
The Gunners pressed high for an equaliser in the second half with Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz both missing chances as Sommer and the Inter backline held tight. Inter reinforced by Marcus Thuram and Nicolo Barella, but Arsenal continued to press, only to be constantly thwarted by a backline of characters, including a vital block from Yann Bisseck.
Inter’s disciplined defense earned them a fourth straight UCL clean sheet to keep their unbeaten record in the group intact, while Arsenal-who made it five straight UCL games in Italy without a goal-saw their unbeaten run in the competition come to an end.
