Iran’s spot in the 2026 World Cup is now uncertain. This is because their Sports Minister, Ahmad Donyamali, said it would be impossible for their team to play in a tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
On Wednesday, Donyamali stated that Iran was unable to participate due to the increased conflict in the area. This followed air strikes by the United States and Israel on February 28, which were reported to have killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. It looks like Iran might be the first team in a long time to pull out of the biggest football tournament.
FIFA had said before that Iran’s national team, Team Melli, was still scheduled to play their first group game against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15. FIFA can pick a new team if a country that qualified drops out, according to the tournament rules.

James Kitching, who used to be a director for FIFA’s rules, said there’s never been a situation quite like this before. That means that FIFA has the power to decide whatever they want to do next.
So, maybe teams from Asia, like Iraq or the United Arab Emirates, could step in to replace Iran if they choose to step out of the tournament.
FIFA is yet to say anything officially as they keep observing and weighing their options.
