A spokesperson for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ladipo Johnson, has confirmed that President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are considering Rabiu Kwankwaso as a potential running mate in the 2027 general election.
Johnson made this known during a live interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, saying the proposal was not in any way offensive. “It’s not insulting to offer him (the vice president slot); whether he accepts or not is a different thing,” Johnson said.
He noted that political actors within the APC have approached him personally, encouraging him to advise the former Kano State governor to accept the offer.

According to Johnson, the talks surrounding a possible alliance between Kwankwaso and President Tinubu have been ongoing, even though they remain unofficial. He emphasised that the decision would ultimately depend on what the party believes is best for its future.
“I’ve been with Senator Kwankwaso since 2013, 2014 and it’s always about the beliefs of the moment and whether those you are going to get involved with would allow you or make sure that such things happen,” he said.
He further explained that after the 2023 elections, the NNPP made it clear that it was open to meaningful discussions with any political group or party interested in genuine progress.

Johnson disclosed that members of the APC have expressed serious interest in an alliance. “People from the APC have called me to say: ‘Oh, if he is offered, please encourage him to accept’,” he said.
Despite this, he stressed that any decision must be reached collectively within the NNPP. “When it comes to the party, it is a team game,” he added, pointing out that Kwankwaso will not act alone or outside the will of the party.
Kwankwaso Offered 2027 Running Mate Slot, NNPP Reacts
The confirmation that Kwankwaso was offered the 2027 running mate slot has added a fresh twist to Nigeria’s political landscape. The NNPP’s statement shows that a political alliance with APC is not off the table, but any agreement must align with the party’s broader vision. As 2027 approaches, the offer made to Kwankwaso may be a sign of deeper political shifts ahead — and whether he accepts or not will be a major political turning point. The possibility that Kwankwaso may team up with Tinubu is no longer rumour, it’s now a real consideration.
