Netflix just announced that it will release a talent show judged by One Direction star Liam Payne later this year.
Liam Payne’s Tragic Passing and Legacy
Liam Payne, the former One Direction star, was involved in one of his final projects, Netflix’s “Building the Band”, before his untimely death in October 2024. The singer tragically passed away at the age of 31 after a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Payne filmed his role as a guest judge on the show alongside Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland and Pussycat Dolls star Nicole Scherzinger. The series, which brings together aspiring singers to form a band, is set to premiere on Netflix in 2025.
What Is “Building the Band
“Building the Band” is a new reality competition series that follows a unique concept similar to Netflix’s “Love is Blind”. Contestants are kept in separate booths and must form a band based solely on musical compatibility, connection, chemistry, and merit—without seeing each other.
The show’s synopsis reads:
“All they have to go on is musical compatibility, connection, chemistry, and merit… with incredible performances, compelling drama, and one big goal – to find the next great music band – the stage is set for an unforgettable experience.”
Meet the Judges and Host
The series will be hosted by Backstreet Boys star AJ McLean, with Nicole Scherzinger serving as a mentor and judge. Liam Payne and Kelly Rowland will appear as guest judges, adding star power to the show.
Scherzinger, who previously judged Payne on The X Factor in 2010, played a pivotal role in his journey to stardom. It was during this audition that Payne was grouped with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson to form One Direction.
Tributes to Liam Payne
Following his tragic death, Payne’s former partner Cheryl (mother of his son, Bear) and his One Direction bandmates attended his funeral in Buckinghamshire in November 2024. The music world continues to mourn the loss of the talented singer.
Investigation into Liam Payne’s Death
An investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Argentina is ongoing. Five individuals, including Payne’s friend Roger Nores, the hotel manager, and a receptionist, have been charged with manslaughter. Additionally, a hotel employee and waiter were charged with supplying cocaine.
A hearing at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court in December 2024 was adjourned until a pre-inquest review on November 2025, where further details about Payne’s death are expected to emerge.
