The high degree of significant oil leakage surrounding its coastline and waterways has been bemoaned by the leadership of Odimodi and its federated communities in Iduwini Kingdom, who have called it concerning.
On Thursday, July 18th, a fire was detected on the Britania U drilling vessel platform at Ajakpa Field, OML 90, 10.77 nautical miles south of Forcadoes Terminal in Delta State.
Comrade New-World Endoro, the Chairman of Odimodi and its Federated Communities, urged Britania-U Nigeria Limited to start immediately cleaning up and remediating the environment during a press conference yesterday.
He emphasised that people are already experiencing negative effects from the spill. He warned that the people in Isiayegbene, Beniboye, Odimodi, and Gbidipou community would not put up with any more delays in the cleanup and remediation, and emphasised that a Joint Investigation Visit, or JIV, should be established right away.
He noted that the spill resulting from a fire incident at the Britania-U Vessel drilling platform had spread to these communities.
Endoro, who escorted other community members to the contaminated locations, bemoaned the enormous spill’s terrible effects on the ecosystem and urged the federal, state, and local governments of Burutu to assist the people since the spill has ruined the aquatic life as well as the surrounding ecosystem.
While lamenting about the suffering of the people caused by the spill, the Youth President of the Odimodi Community, Comrade Monday Laide, and other community leaders, Isaiah Ingo and Madam Peremene Helen, called on the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to come to the people’s aid immediately as life is gradually becoming intolerable.
Bottom Line
Comrade New-World Endoro’s call for immediate cleanup and remediation by Britania-U Nigeria Limited is not only justified but urgent.
The environmental damage and health risks posed by oil spills necessitate prompt action to mitigate further harm. The establishment of a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) is crucial to assess the spill’s impact accurately and to ensure accountability from the responsible parties.
