Manchester City continue to pressure leaders Arsenal with another very tight 1-0 win at Leeds United’s ground, Elland Road.
City was the one who needed to win the most, but Leeds made it difficult for the Citizens. Leeds early pressure gave them two good chances that fell to Calvert-Lewin, but failed to take any of them. Brenden Aaronson was also close when a goal-bound flick was blocked by a defender as Leeds started brilliantly.
City showed helplessness, but only in the late first half did they begin to impose themselves, and the only goal came against the run of play at the very last second of the first half when Antoine Semenyo brilliantly tapped in Rayan Aït-Nouri’s cross inside the box to the great surprise of the fans.
In the second half, Leeds started aggressively again, but the City back line was uncompromising. Calvert-Lewin was nearly scoring, but a timely block saved the day, while City, at the other end, through some sharp plays by Omar Marmoush and Marc Guéhi, were close to scoring their second until a great double save by Karl Darlow was what kept the hosts in the game.
With Daniel Farke making more offensive substitutions, Leeds put more pressure on the City defense, but they managed to keep a clean sheet, winning for the sixth time in a row over Leeds in direct encounters. With this result, City are just two points behind Arsenal, while Leeds are six points above the drop zone.
