At least 37 persons have been rescued, two others injured and a lot of persons feared stuck inside a building that collapsed at Lagos Street in the Garki Village area, Abuja.
Nkrchu Isa, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, spokes representative had confirmed the incident early Thursday morning.
As at the time of filing this report, rescue efforts are ongoing as the search for more victims has exacerbated at the scene of the building collapse at Lagos Street, Garki Village opposite Garki Police Station in the FCT according to Isa’s statement.
“A team of the FCT Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, together with the Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC, FCT Police Command, and the VIO are presently on ground to carry out rescue operations.”
“The two-storey structure which served as both a residential and commercial building had collapsed on Wednesday night. 37 persons have so far, been rescued alive, while 2 others were grievously injured.”
Isa had also revealed that the agency’s Search and Rescue team is presently awaiting excavators to exacerbate the search and make sure that victim is left in the rubble.
Structures suddenly collapsing is not an uncommon occurrence in Nigeria. The reasons can be attributed to
poor workmanship, low-grade materials, and corruption to avoid official oversight.
A growing trend that the federal government has failed to look into.
