As Americans prepare for the Memorial Day weekend, many are wondering what’s open and closed on the national holiday. This year, Memorial Day falls on May 27, and while it’s a time for relaxation and fun, it’s also a day to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Stock Market and Financial Markets

All U.S. stock and bond markets will be closed on Memorial Day, with bond markets closing early at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 26.

Post Office and Mail Delivery

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will not deliver mail on Monday, May 27. However, FedEx will operate its Custom Critical shipments, and UPS will operate its Express Critical shipments. FedEx Office stores and UPS Store locations may have modified hours, so it’s best to check with your local store in advance.

Banks and ATMs

Banks will be closed on Memorial Day, but you can still access your money through ATMs or online banking apps.

Travel and Road Trips

If you’re planning a road trip, be aware that many Americans will be hitting the road, with AAA predicting 43.8 million travelers. Make sure to plan ahead, check for traffic updates, and drive safely.

Memorial Day History

Memorial Day has a rich history, dating back to 1868 when Civil War veterans established the holiday to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. In 1971, the holiday was shifted to the last Monday in May, and it’s now a time to honor all Americans who have died in military service.
