The Comptroller of NCS Adamawa/Taraba Command, Garba Bature Bashir, revealed that a significant amount of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) was intercepted en route to transborder terrorists near the Nigeria/Cameroon border in Adamawa State. Bashir emphasized that the operation targeted anti-smuggling efforts and succeeded in preventing the delivery of petrol to terrorists operating in the region.
What They Are Saying
According to Bashir, the intercepted PMS, along with the means of conveyance, was valued at N10,871,496.25. The seized items included 12,435 liters of PMS packed in jerry cans, as well as a used Mitsubishi truck and a motorcycle used for transportation.
According to him “we suspect the fuel was being taken to terrorists, because these bandits operate around mountainous regions that cut across Nigeria and Cameroon. And you know they don’t walk by foot; they are on bikes and they use petrol, PMS.”
On noting the importance of the seizure, he added that when they don’t have access to the product it helps in fighting insurgency and security issues.
Why It Matters
The interception of petrol intended for transborder terrorists underscores the ongoing efforts to combat smuggling and illicit trade across Nigeria’s territorial borders. Preventing the delivery of fuel to insurgents is crucial for enhancing security and combating insurgency in the region. The success of this operation highlights the importance of synergy among security agencies, robust border management, and intelligence sharing in addressing security challenges.
Bottom Line
The interception of a large volume of petrol destined for transborder terrorists demonstrates the effectiveness of anti-smuggling efforts and the commitment of security operatives in safeguarding Nigeria’s borders. Continued collaboration among security agencies and proactive measures are essential for preventing the flow of resources to insurgents and ensuring national security.
