Varsities, polys behind mobilization of illegal graduates for NYSC – Oloyede

  • The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, on Tuesday said some tertiary institutions assisted fake graduates to mobilise for the National Youth Service Corps programme.
  • According to him, most of the illegitimate mobilisation for the NYSC is perpetrated in collaboration with the students’ affair units or the registries of tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
  • Oloyede said this while declaring open the 2021 Batch ‘A’ Pre-mobilisation workshop in Nasarawa state.

EFCC deepens Tinubu probe, demands asset declaration form from CCB

  • The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has deepened its probe into All Progressives Congress stalwart, Bola Tinubu.
  • To this end, the EFCC has written a letter to the Code of Conduct Bureau, requesting copies of Tinubu’s asset declaration form.
  • A copy of the letter which was published by online news medium, The Peoples Gazette, revealed that the investigation into Tinubu began last year after the removal of erstwhile Chairman, Ibrahim Magu.
  • Attempts to speak with the EFCC Spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, proved abortive as he did not respond to calls.
  • However, a senior EFCC official confirmed the authenticity of the letter, adding that it was part of a wider probe.
  • The official, who wished to remain anonymous, said the probe was sequel to some petitions written against Tinubu since 2018 which Magu had failed to act on.

NLC mobilises for protest over planned re-classification of minimum wage

Nigeria: NLC, TUC, JNPSNC Meet Over Minimum Wage Deadlock - allAfrica.com
  • The Nigeria Labour Congress has said it will embark on a nationwide protest on March 10, 2021 over moves by the National Assembly to remove the national minimum wage from the exclusive to the concurrent legislative list.
  • The Congress said the protest would be held in the 36 states Houses of Assembly in reaction to the plans by the House of Representatives to alter the present wage structure, which gave the Federal Government the power to negotiate minimum wage for workers in the country.
  • The House of Representatives had last week debated a bill to remove the powers to negotiate wage matters from the exclusive to the concurrent list, citing the inability of state governors to pay the N30,000 minimum wage for the move.

States gear up as Nigeria gets 3.9 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine

Nigeria to receive 100,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines by January -- Official
  • Nigeria on Tuesday received 3.94 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID – 19 vaccine.
  • The vaccine was received through the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Assess Facility (COVAX).
  • COVAX, an initiative co-led by the Vaccine Alliance, GAVI and the World Health Organisation seeks to ensure equitable access to a COVID – 19 vaccine by dividing about two billion doses across 92 low-and middle-income countries.

Reps move to restrict FG on loans, agreements

  • The House of Representatives on Tuesday held a public hearing on the Treaties (Making Procedure) Bill 2020, which sought to review and amend the Treaties
  • The bill seeks to repeal the Nigerian laws relating to treaties and agreements and re-enact them to be in line with democratic principles as contained in the 1999 Constitution
  • When the bill becomes law, it will become compulsory for the Federal Government to seek the approval of the National Assembly and two-third of the state Houses of Assembly during negotiation and after signing international agreements and protocols as well as contractual agreements and borrowing terms with other countries or organizations.
