Three of Africa’s largest financial institutions, First Bank of Nigeria, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and Zenith Bank, have joined Zone’s decentralized payment network. This move follows Zone’s recent securing of $8.5 million in seed funding led by Flourish Ventures and TLcom Capital.

Zone, a regulated blockchain network, enables payments and acceptance of digital currencies. The company’s decentralized Point-of-Sale (PoS) Payment gateway, ZonePOS, was launched recently, solidifying its position as Africa’s leading payment infrastructure provider.

The integration of these prominent banks into Zone’s network marks a significant step towards achieving a cashless society in Nigeria. The network’s end-to-end transparency and automatic reconciliation prevent chargeback fraud and ensure same-day settlements.

Obi Emetarom, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Zone, expressed excitement about the integration of the banks. He noted that having UBA, First Bank, and Zenith Bank on the network underscores the growing trust in Zone’s technology.

Emetarom highlighted that the collaboration would help advance Nigeria’s payment landscape and contribute to a truly inclusive financial ecosystem operating without cash.

“We are thrilled to have UBA, Zenith Bank, and First Bank join our network. Their integration into our decentralized payment network is a significant milestone in our journey to advance the payment landscape in Nigeria and the rest of the world,” he said.

Olayiwola Osoba, Zone’s Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications, emphasized the importance of this development. “This announcement demonstrates the confidence of leading financial institutions in Zone’s technology and its ability to deliver reliable, frictionless, and universally interoperable payment experiences.”

The incorporation of these banks into Zone’s network is a testament to the company’s commitment to advancing the payment landscape in Nigeria and promoting financial inclusion.
