Speaking during a public lecture organized by the Nigerian Gas Association (NGA), Akachukwu Nwokedi, NGA president, argued that the country would make substantial savings if it adopted gas-powered vehicles. The switch to gas could save approximately 70 percent of the costs normally incurred in moving vehicles from one point to another.
The Nigerian Gas Association insists that Nigeria needs to transition to natural gas as a way to revive the economy while mitigating further environmental degradation. “Since our country has sufficient gas reserves, we should utilize them,” he emphasized. According to him, relocating this resource base requires economic and environmental justification.
The NGA praised ongoing efforts to promote Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and viewed Greenville LNG’s successful test drive of LNG-powered trains as a breakthrough in the nation’s gas initiative. The association also recognized PiCNG’s deployment of CNG conversion kits through the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG).
Nigeria should adopt gas-powered transportation to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, limit emissions linked to global warming and climate change, and foster sustainable growth. Consequently, the Nigerian Gas Association urges authorities to develop a transport policy requiring state officials to use gas-powered vehicles.
