The crackdown on Binance in Nigeria has caused global concern, with recent accusations from US lawmakers demanding the release of a detained Binance executive, Tigran Gambaryan.

On Friday, the Nigerian federal government denied claims made by US lawmakers that Gambaryan, held in Kuje prison, lacks access to quality medical care and is in poor health. The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said Gambaryan’s detention is lawful and based on a court order.

US lawmakers French Hill and Chrissy Houlahan visited Gambaryan on Wednesday. They reported that he is suffering from malaria and double pneumonia, has lost a lot of weight, and is not getting proper medical attention. They have called for his immediate release.

Government’s Response

Minister Mohammed Idris called the lawmakers’ claims false and baseless, stressing that Gambaryan’s detention is legal. He said Gambaryan has access to quality medical care and consular services from his home country as needed.

“It is necessary for the Nigerian government to address claims that Binance Executive, Tigran Gambaryan, is being held in poor prison conditions or that his health is deteriorating. These allegations are false and should be ignored. Gambaryan is being lawfully detained and has access to quality medical care and consular services from his home government,” the statement read.

Idris emphasized that the Nigerian government is committed to protecting Gambaryan’s rights, including a fair trial and good healthcare, according to Nigerian law. He noted that only the court can change the terms of Gambaryan’s detention or order his release.

“The Nigerian government will continue to follow due process in its effort to bring Binance to justice, a legitimate goal pursued by several countries worldwide. This commitment to legal and diplomatic standards shows Nigeria’s dedication to justice and the integrity of its judicial processes. Gambaryan is being treated fairly, and his legal and human rights are protected during the proceedings.”

Bottom Line

The demands of US lawmakers for the release of Tigran Gambaryan put significant pressure on Nigeria’s sovereignty and challenge its legal processes. Despite the controversy surrounding Gambaryan’s detention, it is important for the Nigerian government to be allowed the freedom to handle the case without external interference, ensuring justice is served according to Nigerian law.
