The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has vowed to embark on a nationwide strike following the invasion of the Oritsetimeyin oil drilling rig by Naval Special Forces. The rig was shut down because of a long-standing disagreement between workers and their bosses.
NUPENG leaders confirmed this event and said, “We are getting our members ready for a nationwide strike. The government should not help employers break agreements.”
Previously, NUPENG had asked the Federal Government, the National Security Adviser, the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, and the Department of State Security to help solve the problem.
NUPENG President Prince Williams Akporeha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale pointed out, “Using force by employers and their supporters goes against democratic values and good working relationships.”
