The 2025 Ojude Oba Festival wasn’t just a cultural event, it was a full-blown fashion fiesta. Held annually in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria, this year’s edition saw an array of color, tradition, and unique styles, further cementing its reputation as one Nigeria’s most glamorous cultural events. From age-grade groups in meticulously coordinated aso-oke to celebrities turning up in bespoke agbadas, the festival was truly a masterclass in Yoruba opulence and flair.

Understanding The History of Ojude Oba

Ojude Oba 2025: A Fashion Extravaganza Where Yoruba Royalty Honour Custom

Ojude Oba, meaning “The King’s Forecourt,” is a centuries-old Yoruba tradition where the Ijebu people pay homage to their monarch, the Awujale of Ijebuland. What began as a post-Eid Islamic gathering has evolved into a vibrant celebration of unity, heritage, and jaw-dropping fashion.

This year’s edition, held on June 8, 2025, was particularly special. Despite the absence of the 91-year-old Awujale (due to health reasons), the festival dazzled with even more creativity, drawing attendees from across Nigeria and the diaspora, especially due to fact that it was highly anticipated.

The Fashion Breakdown: What Stole the Show?

  1. The Regberegbe Age-Grade Groups

The Regberegbe (age-grade societies) were the heartbeat of Ojude Oba’s fashion spectacle. Months of planning went into their matching ensembles, showcasing:

  • Women: Iro and buba in lace, aso-oke, and damask, paired with towering gele head wraps, coral beads and of course, statement sunglasses.
  • Men: Agbadas in bold hues (think emerald green, royal purple, and gold), accessorized with filà caps, walking sticks, and beaded necklaces.

This year (probably due to the hype from the last two editions), Ojude Oba became a red carpet for A-listers, with standout looks from yearly attendee from Ijebu himself, Farooq Oreagba (aka dubbed the “King of Steeze”) who did not disappoint his fans this year in a lemon-yellow agbada with intricate purple embroidery, paired with round sunglasses and a signature staff.

Popular Nollywood actors Adedimeji Lateef and Femi Branch both commanded attention in their own tights, wearing an animal pelt attire, agbada complete with black staffs and coral bead stacks.

Lil Kesh brought his youthful, streetwear energy in a vibrant yellow agbada with striped aso-oke accents .

  1. The Horse-Riding Families

The Balogun-Kuku families (traditional warriors) stole the show with their majestic horseback entrances. Adorned in gold and silver ornaments, the riders—including women in dazzling regalia—displayed equestrian prowess while serving their own elaborate looks that will continue to serve as traditional fashion inspo for years to come.

  1. Accessories Seen From the Festival

  1. Sunglasses: must be oversized, colorful, and unapologetically bold
  2. Coral Beads: Worn lavishly by both men and women as a symbol of royalty.
  3. Hand Fans & Walking Sticks: Functional yet culturally appropriate.

The Cultural Significance: Why Ojude Oba Fashion Matters

Beyond the glitz, Ojude Oba’s fashion is a language of identity. As noted by one attendee:

“We don’t dress to trend; we dress to honor our ancestors”.

Muslims, Christians, and traditionalists celebrate this festival side by side, with no qualms. Economic wise, local artisans (weavers, tailors, beadmakers) thrive from festival commissions during this time.

Finally, due to its growing popularity, the festival has now become a bucket-list event for the younger culture and fashion enthusiasts based outside the shores of Nigeria.

This year’s festival proved that tradition and modernity can coexist spectacularly. Whether you’re a style lover, culture enthusiast, or simply curious about Nigerian heritage, Ojude Oba is the ultimate inspiration.
