Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has handed out brand new 2025 SUV vehicles to all 18 local government chairmen in the state. According to the governor, the gesture is not for luxury or showmanship but to enhance effective grassroots governance. The event, held at the State Secretariat in Benin City on Saturday, was attended by his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, and top government officials.
Okpebholo stressed that his administration does not tamper with local government funds and expects chairmen to deliver real results in return. “The vehicles commissioned today are not for the private use of the local government chairmen but for the development of the people at the grassroots. I will monitor you to ensure the right thing is done,” the governor said.
SUV Distribution Will Be Matched With Performance, Says Okpebholo
The governor noted that Edo State is entering a new era of development and governance. “New things are beginning to happen in Edo State under the watch of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said. He also stated, “Edo will experience more development even as we compete with Lagos, Abuja, and other states of the Federation.”
Okpebholo, who has consistently promised to allow the third tier of government operate independently, said, “My administration has not interfered with your funds and resources.” He made it clear that chairmen would be held accountable for their council allocations and measured by the work they deliver.
Eseigbe: It’s the First Time Council Chairmen Are Getting 2025 SUVs
Commissioner for Local Government, Community and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lucky Eseigbe, described the move as unprecedented in the state’s history. He said, “This is the first time in the history of the State that 2025 models of SUV vehicles are purchased for local government chairmen.”
He added, “The 18 local government chairmen are developing the State as blocks of classrooms, healthcare centres, and roads are being built along other infrastructural development in the council areas.”
Eseigbe praised the governor for giving council bosses full access to their resources, saying the impact is already visible across the 18 LGAs.
Okpebholo Gifts 2025 SUVs to Edo Council Chairmen
This development adds a fresh layer to the ongoing conversation about how governors treat local government authorities. While some state governors face criticism for hijacking council funds, Okpebholo claims to be doing the opposite, giving council leaders both the tools and the autonomy they need, while still watching closely.
But the public will be watching too. A 2025 SUV doesn’t build roads or provide healthcare actions do. And if these chairmen fail to translate mobility into impact, then the gesture could quickly look like optics. Either way, the headline stays the same: Okpebholo Gifts 2025 SUVs to Edo Council Chairmen.
