The creators of advanced chatbot ChatGPT have called on US lawmakers to regulate artificial intelligence (AI).
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, testified before a US Senate committee on Tuesday about the opportunities and pitfalls of the new technology.
Altman said a new agency should be set up to license AI companies.
ChatGPT and other similar programs can provide incredibly human-like answers to your questions, but they can also be very inaccurate.
Altman, 38, has become something of a spokesperson for emerging industries. He has never hesitated to address the ethical issues raised by AI and has pushed for further regulation.
He said AI could be as big as the “printing press,” but also acknowledged potential dangers.
He also acknowledged the potential impact of AI on the economy, including the potential for AI technology to replace some jobs and lead to layoffs in certain sectors.
But some senators have argued that new legislation is needed to make it easier for people to sue OpenAI.
