Fakunle Unity High School in Osun State has shut down its academic activities on Tuesday, May 23 after some of its pupils lost consciousness after inhaling teargas fired by Police men of Mopol 39 Base, situated opposite the school.

According to a source, the pupils were already seated in their classes, receiving their morning lessons, when teargas fired by the policemen filtered into the school environment. Some of the pupils upon inhaling it, had lost consciousness, and were immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, while the other students not severely affected had been taken to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.

Meanwhile, parents have been informed to come and check in on their wards in the hospital, and the school academic activities has been shut down for the day.

The Police Spokesperson of the state, has confirmed and apologised for the incident. According to her, the teargas had come about when they were carrying out their usual morning drills.

She said, “I just spoke to the people at the Mopol Base. They were just engaging in their morning drills, which involved the use of tear gas. We apologise for the inconvenience. There will be necessary adjustments in operation since the base is now close to where other people also operate their businesses
