Phil Foden has been voted the 2023/24 EA SPORTS Player of the Season, capping off a stellar year for the 23-year-old Manchester City midfielder. Foden has been instrumental in City’s campaign, which sees them just one win away from becoming the first team to secure four consecutive Premier League titles.
Foden scored 17 goals and provided eight assists, directly contributing to 25 goals in 34 Premier League appearances. His efforts have helped City maintain a narrow two-point lead over Arsenal heading into the final day of the season.
“To win this award is an achievement that I am extremely proud of,” Foden said via Manchester City’s official website. “The Premier League is acknowledged as the greatest league in the world, and it is a pleasure to have been nominated with so many other great players who have all enjoyed special seasons for their clubs.”
The England international has showcased his versatility by playing both centrally and on the wing. He has logged the second-most minutes of any City outfield player this season, stepping up significantly in the absence of injured playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, who missed more than half of City’s matches.
In March, City manager Pep Guardiola praised Foden as “the best player in the Premier League.” Should City triumph over West Ham United on the final day, Foden will become the youngest player ever to win six Premier League titles.
Foden’s award marks the fifth consecutive campaign a Manchester City player has won the EA SPORTS Player of the Season. Previous winners include Erling Haaland last season, Kevin De Bruyne in 2019/20 and 2021/22, and Ruben Dias in 2020/21.
Foden topped an eight-man shortlist that included notable names like Haaland, Alexander Isak, Martin Odegaard, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Virgil van Dijk, and Ollie Watkins. Votes from the public, combined with those of a panel of football experts, secured Foden’s win for the first time in his career.
