Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Sues Senate President for Defamation

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a defamation lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing the Senate president of defamatory statements, stemming from a dispute over her Senate seat reassignment. The disagreement over seat reshuffling following the movement of opposition lawmakers to the ruling party has thrust the Senate into the public spotlight. This led to a confrontation between Senator Natasha and the Senate President.

Details of the Lawsuit

On February 25, 2025, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan filed a lawsuit (CV/737/25) at the Federal Capital Territory High Court. The suit names the Senate President (first defendant), the Federal Republic of Nigeria (second defendant), and the Senate President’s Senior Legislative Aide, Mfon Patrick (third defendant). The core of the lawsuit centers on allegations z of defamatory statements made by the Senate President and subsequently published by his aide on Facebook.

Alleged Defamatory Statements and Their Impact

The contentious Facebook post, titled “Is the Local Content Committee of the Senate Natasha’s Birthright?”, is at the heart of the legal action. According to Senator Natasha’s lawyer, Victor Giwa, the post contained statements suggesting that the Senator viewed her role as a lawmaker as solely focused on appearances, stating that she “thinks being a lawmaker is all about pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the chambers.” Giwa argues these statements are defamatory, provocative, and disparaging, causing significant damage to his client’s reputation amongst her peers and the wider public.

Demands for Damages and Injunction

The lawsuit seeks a range of remedies. Specifically, it demands a declaration that the statements made are indeed defamatory. Furthermore, it requests a perpetual injunction preventing the defendants and their associates from making further defamatory statements. Finally, it includes a claim for substantial damages: N100 billion in general damages and N300 million in litigation costs.
