Nigerian singer, Akinmayokun Awodumila, otherwise known by his stage name as Mr. May D, has claimed that he was the one that introduced the amapiano genre of music to the Nigerian scene as he had been the pioneer of the Nigeria-South African collaboration.
Amapiano is a house music style that emerged from South Africa in 2012. It is a combination of deep house, jazz, and lounge music characterized by synths, airy pads, and wide percussive basslines.
However, May D’s statement is coming after an online tussle between Davido and popular South African DJ, Maphorisa, who responded to a tweet today September 14, crediting Davido for the wide success of amapiano in Africa and the globe. According to DJ Maphorisa, the first amapiano song that had a Nigerian artist(s) on it was the song ‘Sponono,’ which featured Burna Boy in 2019.
This had triggered Davido to reply to the tweet, saying that DJ Maphorisa had never liked him and he couldn’t say why.
“You’ve never liked me y? I’ve always been good to you …. Anyways! AWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY NOW!!!!!! Chu chu chu chu chu” Davido had quote tweeted the South African.
May D on seeing the turn of events tweeted:
“Na me bring amapiano come Naija, and I have awards to prove that! We started the Naija South African collaboration! I don’t like saying sh*t like this, but y’all like putting me under the box.”
