Since the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, many traditional rulers have avoided public visits to his palace due to the ongoing power tussles between various factions in the emirate. However, on Sunday, the Emir of Potiskum, Umar Bauya, from Yobe State, became the first northern emir to pay a solidarity visit to Emir Sanusi at his palace in Kano.
A Symbolic Visit
Emir Bauya’s visit to Emir Sanusi was significant not only as an act of support but also as an acknowledgment of Sanusi’s status as both the Emir of Kano and the spiritual leader of the Tijaniyya Sect in Nigeria. Bauya expressed his solidarity with Sanusi and reflected on his own experiences, drawing parallels between their leadership journeys.
“It happened to me some 26 years ago, and with the help of Allah, I was reinstated and now live peacefully with my people,” Bauya remarked. “The return of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II is a significant milestone that proves his dedication to his people. He should count on my personal support and that of my people.”
Appeal for Support
During the visit, Emir Bauya took the opportunity to request Sanusi’s assistance in completing the construction of a Jumaat Mosque at his palace. Bauya explained that the mosque project had been initiated several years ago but was delayed due to financial difficulties.
“We are seeking your usual support on the construction of the Jumaat Mosque at my palace. The project began three years ago but has stalled due to financial constraints. We hope that you will help us, as you always do, to complete it,” Bauya appealed.
Emir Sanusi’s Response
In response, Emir Sanusi expressed his gratitude for Bauya’s visit, noting that it was a significant gesture of unity. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between traditional rulers for the benefit of their people.
“What the Emir of Potiskum has done today is a vindication of the unity and togetherness among us,” Sanusi said. “This unity will positively impact the life and security of our people.”
Why It Matters
The visit of Emir Bauya to Emir Sanusi is a powerful message of unity in northern Nigeria, where traditional institutions play a crucial role in fostering peace and addressing community issues. The show of solidarity also emphasises the importance of collaboration among traditional rulers, especially in times of political and social tension.
Bottom Line
The solidarity visit by Emir Bauya not only strengthens the bond between the traditional leaders of Kano and Potiskum but also serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility they hold in leading and supporting their communities. The mutual support between these rulers may foster greater cooperation, ultimately contributing to the stability and development of the region.
