Switzerland is expected to become a net importer of cheese this year, marking the first time in its history.
Boris Beuret, the head of the country’s dairy association, highlighted the challenges faced by domestic producers due to the liberalization of the Swiss milk market in recent years.
In an interview with Geneva-based newspaper Le Temps, Beuret emphasized the need for measures to ensure that Switzerland, renowned worldwide for its high-quality cheese like Gruyère and Emmentaler, can sustain its cheese production for its own population.
Importing cheese, he cautioned, would be economically, socially, and ecologically counterproductive.
