Nigeria was definitely a side on a mission from the onset, with Chiwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo firing two tantalising attempts which South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini could only manage to parry. South Africa found themselves under a lot of pressure in the first twelve minutes.

South African goalie was very busy. Despite their attacking momentum, it took until the 44th minute for the breakthrough. Bomgeka Gamede’s handball in the box allowed the Super Falcons to be awarded a spot-kick, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade was calm and composed from the penalty spot, making it 1-0 for Nigeria at halftime.

South Africa came out after the interval with renewed vigour and were themselves awarded a penalty in the 58th minute after a foul committed by veteran defender Osinachi Ohale. Linda Motlhalo made a calm finish that meant the score was now 1-1.

Until the dying moments of the game it looked like the two teams were set to extend the game beyond 90 minutes only for right-back Michelle Alozie to get in a shot that thundered past the goalkeeper and ensured a Nigeria victory that will forever be remembered.

Justin Madugu’s team now have their sights set on the final as they hunt for an unprecedented 12th WAFCON championship. They will meet the winner of the clash between Morocco and Ghana in the final.
