On Friday, 15-time major champion Tiger Woods in a statement said that he had lumbar disc replacement surgery in New York following pain and lack of mobility in his back.
Woods in a statement released on Saturday said that the operation, which was done by Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi, was a success.
“After the pain and lack of mobility in my back, I took the initiative to see doctors and surgeons for tests,” Woods said in his statement. “The scans showed that I had a collapsed disc in L4/5, disc fragments and a spinal canal that was severely narrowed. I made the decision to have my disc replaced yesterday and I already know that I made the right decision in terms of my health and my back.”
There is no indication of a return-to-play schedule following Woods’ absence from professional golf since the 2023 British Open.
In the last couple of years, the 48-year-old has been on the receiving end of various injuries, including a terribly broken leg in a car accident in 2021, a back surgery in 2023, and a ruptured Achilles tendon earlier this year.
Woods latest mishap makes him unavailable for the Hero World Challenge in December and raises questions about whether he will be able to participate in the TGL tech-golf league that is coming up, where he was going to be the Jupiter Links team’s representative.
