President Bola Tinubu has lauded a famed Professor of Semiotics and African Literature, Professor Ropo Sekoni, as he clocks 80.
In a statement Aguri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media, released on Saturday, August 12, Tinubu recognized the valuable contributions of Sekoni to both the reinstatement of democracy in Nigeria and the global body of knowledge.
The statement reads partly:
“Today, I acknowledge and celebrate my friend, comrade and longtime associate, Professor Ropo Sekoni, on his 80th birthday celebration. Reaching 80 years of age is a marvelous gift from God. I join his family and our shared friends to celebrate him on this important milestone.”
“Together with other pro-democracy activists, Professor Sekoni and I battled confidently at home and abroad for the abolishment of military rule and the reinstallation of democracy in Nigeria following the repeal of the June 12, 1993 election.”
“Professor Sekoni was a leading fighter in that struggle. He was also an invaluable support system for us in government,” President Tinubu added.
“We are filled with gratitude to God that He has made it possible for Professor Sekoni to reach this important age in good health. We pray to the God Almighty to permit him more years to witness the new Nigeria we are building together where tranquility, security and opulence shall reign supreme.”
