NANS, The National Association of Nigerian Students, on Saturday, elected Comrade Umar Faruk Lawal, a student from Bayero University, Kano, as its new president. Lawal will be taking over from Sunday Asefon, whose tenure has ended.
The winner of the unions’ election held, had been declared at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja. The new NANS president in a press conference after his victory promised to make the Nigerian students’ issues his priorities.
Commenting on the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, -ASUU, Lawal revealed that his leadership would engage both the federal government, the Minister of Education, and the leadership of ASUU with the mind to discontinue the academic strike so that students would return to their schools.
As for the association NANS, Lawal had said that it would no longer indulge in partisan politics just as added that the new NANS would collaborate with security agencies to brainstorm and proffer workable templates for the security of lives and properties in our beloved nation, that is, under his watchful eyes.
The newly elected president also thanked all Nigerian students who had supported him in the past week to ensure his victory, promising to never to let his people (students) down.
