What Obaseki’s Supreme Court victory portends for Edo APC

The Supreme Court on Friday rejected an appeal by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its boss, William Edobor, against the Governor of Edo, Godwin Obaseki, in the case of forged certificates.

APC failed to prove that the certificate issued to Obaseki by the University of Ibadan was forged. The certificate was used by the defendant to compete for the 2020 gubernatorial election.

The APC did not only lose the case against his former party man but the apex court also awarded N1 million in favour of Obaseki.

Governor Obaseki, while reacting to the court victory, said that the verdict had once again shown that the judiciary has the capacity to defend Nigeria’s democracy.

The Governor also added that the Supreme Court had just exposed a vicious and malicious ploy by the opposition against his election victory, which was granted to him by the good people of Edo for free.

The ripple effect of this victory is that – the All Progressives Congress (APC) is slowly dying (if not dead in Edo State), the APC legislative members (state assembly and NASS) will likely not return in 2023.

If APC have any hope of resurrecting in Edo then they must pull out all the stops to bring back Obaseki. APC need him more than he needs them, anything shy of this will see APC’s decrepitude further denigrate.
