Ace Nigerian producer and music executive Don Jazzy has admitted that the end of Mo’Hits Records in 2012 left him so devastated that he considered quitting music entirely.
In a chat with Rolling Stone, the Mavin Records founder recalled how the fallout with D’banj shook his confidence and nearly made him relocate abroad.
“When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” he shared.
The painful breakup, however, became a blessing in disguise. Instead of walking away from the industry, Don Jazzy chose to rebuild — this time with a new dream and a new team. That decision birthed Mavin Records, a label that has since evolved into one of the strongest forces in Afrobeats.

The label’s early years saw familiar faces like Dr SID, D’Prince, and Wande Coal working alongside fresh voices such as Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, and Di’ja.
Over time, Mavin has grown into a powerhouse nurturing a new generation of global stars, including Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, Boy Spyce, Magixx, Bayanni, Johnny Drille, and DJ Big N.
Mavin’s success has also attracted major global attention. Its partnership with Universal Music Group marked a new era for the label, opening doors for even greater international expansion.
