History was made in the 2026 World Cup on Saturday as Lionel Messi and Harry Kane set new standards while Colombia came first in Group K with an entertaining draw against Portugal and Argentina kept its perfect streak with a 3-1 win against Jordan.
Colombia claimed first place in Group K after a competitive 0-0 match against Portugal, which featured plenty of offensive chances on both sides. Columbia’s attack, orchestrated by James Rodriguez, pushed past Portugal on multiple occasions but was unable to find the back of the net in regulation.
Nestor Lorenzo’s side narrowly missed a dramatic win when Davinson Sanchez’s header in stoppage time was disallowed for offside. However, the scoreless tie was enough for Colombia to finish top of group K and set up a round of 32 clash against Ghana.
Portugal took second place and will meet Croatia
Argentina also continued its dominant run with a 3-1 win over Jordan at Dallas Stadium. Star Forward Lionel Messi cemented his record status, scoring his seventh consecutive goal in a World Cup match. He becomes the only player to achieve that feat.

Messi came off the bench in the 80th minute and blasted home a free kick, which was his sixth goal of this World Cup and 19th in total. Giovani Lo Celso had an equally impressive World Cup debut goal on a free-kick. Lautaro Martinez scored Argentina’s first goal by converting a penalty kick, despite Jordan momentarily scoring via Mousa Al Tamari.
Jordan was edged by Argentina, finishing 4th in group J. Next for Argentina is a date with Cape Verde in the next round.
Meanwhile, England clinched first place in Group L with a comfortable 2-0 win against Panama, in which captain Harry Kane became England’s highest World Cup goalscorer with 11 career goals, eclipsing Gary Lineker.
After being scoreless in an otherwise uninspired offensive game in the first half, England’s first goal came in the form of Jude Bellingham, who slammed home a corner from Bukayo Saka and soon afterwards laid on the assist for Kane’s goal.
Bellmingahm also wrote his name in the England record book by becoming the youngest England player since 1966 to both score and assist in a World Cup. Panama struggled to make their mark on the tournament offensively despite their efforts and believed they had scored the first goal of there tournanment, but the goal was ultimately disallowed by VAR for offside.
Another action-packed and record-breaking day of World Cup football has wrapped up with Colombia, Argentina, and England progressing to the next round as the top teams of their respective groups.
