FC Barcelona sensation Aitana Bonmati, already a Balon d’Or recipient, added another illustrious accolade to her name by becoming the first footballer ever to clinch the Sportswoman of the Year award at the prestigious Laureus Awards ceremony. The midfielder’s remarkable achievement highlighted her exceptional contributions to both club and country during the 2022/23 season.

Bonmati played a pivotal role in FC Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League triumph, showcasing her immense talent and skill on the pitch. Her stellar performances catapulted her to international stardom, earning her widespread acclaim and recognition.

Moreover, the 26-year-old midfielder led the Spanish women’s national team to unprecedented success, guiding them to victory in their inaugural World Cup and Nations League campaigns. Her leadership and prowess were instrumental in Spain’s triumphs on the global stage, solidifying her status as one of the sport’s brightest stars.

At the Laureus Awards ceremony, Bonmati continued to make history by clinching the Sportswoman of the Year award, a testament to her outstanding achievements and contributions to the sport. Spain’s remarkable triumph at the World Cup, where they emerged victorious against England in the final, earned them the prestigious team award. This groundbreaking feat marked the first time an all-female team received the esteemed Laureus World Team of the Year recognition.

In expressing her gratitude, Bonmati remarked, “I am honored to receive the Laureus for Sportswoman of the Year – and I am also very happy that my international teammates have been recognized as the Team of the Year by the Laureus World Sports Academy.”

Her historic win and the Spanish women’s team’s remarkable achievement serve as a testament to their exceptional talent, dedication, and success on the global stage.
