The Edo political scene has once again delivered its signature antics, this time featuring the state government’s Assets Recovery Committee storming the 2024 Edo Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in a dramatic bid to reclaim a government-owned 32-seater Coaster bus. The bus, hilariously enough, was being used by the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) counsel to the tribunal, which is a new round of drama in the ever-entertaining clash between PDP and APC in Edo State.
For those keeping up, this saga is less about governance and more about political vendettas, with Okpebholo seemingly on a revenge mission backed, of course, by certain powerful figures. The story unfolds in the premises of the Edo High Court, where the tribunal is sitting.
Members of the committee first showed up in the morning before the tribunal session, claiming the bus as one of the numerous assets allegedly taken away by officials of the previous administration under Godwin Obaseki. But rather than recover the bus immediately, the committee reportedly struck a deal with the occupants mostly senior lawyers allowing them to use the vehicle for the day, provided it was returned later.
However, things took a crazy turn after the tribunal sitting. The committee went back on the so-called agreement and demanded the bus back, leading to an embarrassing standoff that descended into an argument.Yes, lawyers, political operatives, and recovery agents engaged in what can only be described as a public drama, all over a bus.
Eventually, party officials from both the APC and PDP intervened to restore a semblance of order. The lawyers, after the altercation, were seen leaving the court premises aboard the very bus at the center of the controversy, proving once again that Edo politics never fails to amuse.
Instead of addressing pressing issues or focusing on governance, resources and attention are wasted on power plays and petty quarrells.
