Veteran highlife icon Bright Chimezie has expressed heartfelt gratitude after Afrobeats sensation Davido acknowledged him as a source of inspiration for his track “With You,” which features Omah Lay.
Speaking in an interview with HipTV, Chimezie disclosed that Davido drew creative influence from his 2018 classic, Because of English, and personally reached out to let him know.
“Words cannot describe how I feel. I’m so delighted. I feel honoured. And I’m grateful to Davido for recognising that he drew inspiration from me,” he said.
The celebrated singer also praised Davido’s humility, revealing he had no idea his music had shaped the Afrobeats hit until the superstar reached out.
“I didn’t even know that his song With You was inspired by my song Because Of English. He was the person who made me to understand that. He put a call across to me and confessed that he was inspired by my song. The humility and everything, I feel so happy about it,” he added.
Though he has taken a step back in recent years to give space for younger talents, Chimezie—who recently signed a publishing deal with Sony Music—confirmed that he is still actively making music.
