Chelsea’s 12-match unbeaten home run in the Premier League ended as Brighton & Hove Albion staged an energetic rally and got a 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge.
After last week’s loss to Manchester United, The Blues made a vibrant start and were lucky to get their goal around the middle of the first half. Moisés Caicedo opened up the defence with an astute pass to Reece James, whose deflected cross was volleyed in at the far post by Enzo Fernández.
Chelsea dominated most of the first period but were left frustrated as they didn’t manage to increase their lead.
At 63 minutes, Trevoh Chalobah received his marching orders for pulling Diego Gómez back to stop him from scoring, meaning Chelsea had to continue the game with 10 men for the second league game in a row. The Seagulls took full advantage of their extra player and got a leveller in the 77th minute, as Danny Welbeck powered a header from Yankuba Minteh’s cross.
Things began to get worse for the home side as Brighton not only scored two more times but also did so in the last moments of the game. Maxim De Cuyper tucked in his first Premier League goal before Welbeck added his second on the break, thus a spectacular win was sealed for the Seagulls.
The score extends Chelsea’s nightmare, while it is a precious lift for Brighton after they have been a bit hesitant in the beginning of the season.
