Cristiano Ronaldo took a swipe at the cautious ambition of Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, as he called on the Dutchman to win the Premier League despite the need for major rebuild at the club. The 39-year-old Portugal star has since moved to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, having parted company with United late in 2022 after falling out with Ten Hag.
Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Ronaldo made it clear that Ten Hag should not rule out competition for major honors during his rebuilding process. “The coach cannot say they’re not going to fight for the Premier League or Champions League. You have to try,” said Ronaldo, who made it clear a positive frame of mind is needed.
Ten Hag, 52, took United to League Cup and FA Cup successes over the past two seasons but has conceded his team are far from being title contenders. United finished last season in eighth and have had a poor start this campaign, losing two of the opening three matches.
Ronaldo admits vast changes are needed at Old Trafford but says it continues to be one of the best clubs in the world. “The club knows, and everybody knows, the investment in a new structure is very important,” he said.
