A serviceman loses his life while trying to save the properties of others. It was said that after he successfully battled the flames, he slumped and died– a questionable death. Autopsies aren’t common in this part of the world but it is likely he succumbed to exhaustion, especially as his boss said that he had only just recovered from a sickness, days ago.
A firefighter has reportedly died while battling an inferno at the Auto Parts Market, in Coal-Camp, Enugu North Local Government Area, Enugu State.
While confirming the incident on Wednesday, Mr Okwudili Ohaa, the Director of Enugu State Fire Service, revealed that the staff slumped and died after successfully putting out the fire that broke out in the Enugu Motor Spare Parts Market.
According to Ohaa, the men of the fire service arrived at the scene around 1.15 am with three fire trucks to put out the blaze which began at midnight on Wednesday from a shop in the market.
While the head of the fire service hadn’t disclosed the cause of the fire, the fire reportedly damaged goods worth millions of Naira before it was put out by the late staff and his team.
Meanwhile, the President of Enugu Motor Spare Parts Dealers Association, Mike Nome, stated that the security officers in the market would have stopped the fire if the shop had not been locked with burglar-proofing.
The cause of the blaze had not been ascertained, as at the time of filing this report.
