Chelsea Legends took a trip down memory lane at Stamford Bridge but eventually fell to Liverpool Legends 1–0 in a thrilling encounter, with Ryan Babel scoring the winning goal in the dying minutes.
Supporters came in numbers to the Bridge to watch their heroes from the past playing once more. Among others, Hazard, Terry, Čech, Makélélé, and Costa were in the spotlight. The atmosphere was absolutely stunning with fans screaming and shouting after every touch, tackle, and trick, and Hazard was undoubtedly the player who attracted most of the attention by producing sparkles of his well-known genius.
The Blues controlled the game and made several good openings and Costa along with Ramires were very close to scoring after shots on target from the Liverpool defense. Petr Čech was brilliant once again and Terry showed his fighting spirit and leadership skills just like old times. The biggest cheer of the game was when Hazard left the field, to the great fans’ applause, also giving his jersey to a small lucky fan later on.
Unfortunately, at the very end of the match, Babel’s shot curved into the net past Carlo Cudicini, depriving the Blues of a fairy tale ending. Nevertheless, the event was a success in terms of raising money for the Chelsea Foundation and Players’ Trust and thus, it served as a lovely reminder of the legends who have been instrumental in the club’s modern era.
They may not have come out on top — but they did not lack love, pride, and nostalgia throughout the afternoon.
