There is Uncertainty growing whether the Iranian National Team will be allowed to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the increased conflict in the Middle East.
Before the conflict, Iran was the third team to get a ticket for the tournament after Japan and New Zealand. The Asian side is found in Group G and is set to kick off their tournament against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15; thereafter, it will be Belgium on June 21 and Egypt on June 26, both in Seattle.
Nevertheless, after Iran skipped a FIFA logistics meeting in Atlanta for all participating nations, the questions have been getting louder. The three-day event was designed for participants to review stadiums and competition operations in the upcoming US, Canada, and Mexico co-hosted tournament.

The absence reflects the rise in geopolitical tensions after the US bombarded Iran, which resulted in several immediate missile and drone strikes all over the region by Iran. The fighting casualties reportedly extend to more than 1, 000.
Iran Football Federation chairman Mehdi Taj agreed that the conflict had put a shadow on preparations for the tournament. Talking to Varzesh3, he said Iran could hardly have turned to the World Cup with “hope” after the bombardments.
There were rumors that Iran’s participation in the World Cup was politically complicated due to a harsh travel ban signed by Donald Trump in 2025 which limited visa availability to Iranian nationals. Exemptions would be made for players and team officials, but only upon approval would supporters and government representatives be allowed entry.
FIFA leader Gianni Infantino and the competition directors have not yet revealed if Iran’s participation will be compromised. FIFA, which awards it with the power to replace a qualified team in case of exceptional circumstances, therefore gives the governing body the right to make a move at any time and to any team.
Meanwhile, FIFA declares that it will keep its eyes on how this situation is unfolding and the worldwide football community is simply waiting for a sign from the summer tournament.
