The Kogi State Government has barred embattled Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, from holding her planned homecoming rally, originally scheduled for Tuesday.

An invitation seen by The Whistler indicated that the suspended lawmaker, who is currently challenging her suspension after accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, was set to be honored at a grand reception organized by her constituents.

Government Cites Security Concerns

The event, slated to begin at 9 a.m., was thrown into uncertainty following an announcement by Governor Usman Ododo imposing a blanket ban on rallies and public gatherings. The governor also ordered a suspension of fishing activities in certain areas, citing intelligence reports suggesting potential security threats.

In a press statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining peace across the state.

Fishing-Related Violence Triggers Restrictions

According to the government’s statement, the decision to impose restrictions was driven by a violent fishing-related crisis in Kogi Local Government Area, specifically in the Kasemiya, Katubo, and Umozu Ette communities. The crisis has reportedly led to the loss of two lives.

As a result, all fishing activities in the affected areas have been suspended until peace is restored. Security operatives have been deployed to enforce compliance with the directive.

Political Backdrop and Community Response

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension from the Senate has been a source of controversy. The lawmaker was suspended in March for alleged misconduct and violation of Senate rules after a dispute with Senate President Akpabio escalated into allegations of sexual harassment, which Akpabio has denied. The Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions recommended a six-month suspension, citing her refusal to cooperate with the committee’s investigations.

The controversy has also divided opinions within the Kogi Central community. While some of her supporters continue to back her, other groups have distanced themselves from the senator, with some factions even threatening to initiate a recall process. Protests have broken out in response to the political feud, with clashes between supporters and opponents of Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Senator’s Response Unclear

When contacted for comments on the government’s decision to halt the rally, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan did not respond. It remains uncertain whether she plans to challenge the restrictions or seek an alternative arrangement to engage with her supporters.

Conclusion

The cancellation of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s homecoming rally highlights the intersection of politics and security concerns in Kogi State. As tensions continue to mount, the outcome of this standoff could have significant implications for the senator’s political future and her standing among her constituents.
