Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, 38, has signed a one-year contract extension with Real Madrid, keeping him at the Bernabeu until 2025, the LaLiga club announced on Wednesday. The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner secured his sixth Champions League title and fourth LaLiga crown with Real Madrid last season.
Modric’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of the 2023-24 season. However, he assured fans of his return during the celebration of their Champions League triumph, which extended Real’s record to 15 European Cups.
Modric, who has lifted 26 trophies since joining Real Madrid in 2012, holds the record for the most titles won by any player at the club.
Despite his age, Modric has shown no signs of retiring, even as his long-time midfield partner Toni Kroos, 34, announced his retirement at the end of the season. Modric also remains committed to his international career with Croatia, despite their early exit from the recent European Championship, where they were eliminated after the group stage.
“I’d like to keep playing forever, but there probably will come a time when I must hang up my boots. I’ll keep playing on, but I don’t know for how much longer,” said Modric, who has earned 178 caps for Croatia.
