Manchester United have announced the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday. The 26-year-old has signed a five-year deal, with the option of a further year, having moved to Old Trafford as United activated his £62.5 million release clause – a transfer that sets a record sale fee for Wolves.
The forward, who found the net 15 times last season in the Premier League, scored 33 goals and added 15 assists in 92 appearances for Wolves. His performances also won him a key place with Brazil, a stage on which he recently played a part in Vinicius Junior’s winner as the Selecção edged past Paraguay 1-0 in World Cup qualifying.
Through an interpreter, Cunha said after the announcement: I am thrilled. “It’s difficult to explain how I feel about becoming a Manchester United player. It’s a dream come true,” he said, “United was my favorite English team as a kid.
United’s director of football Jason Wilcox praised Cunha as one of their high-priority summer targets. “He is one of the most exciting and prolific forward players in the Premier League. His attributes will be a valuable addition to the squad as we look to build a strong squad capable of challenging for honours.”
Cunha is United’s first major signing of the summer as the club attempts to recover from a disappointing 15th-place finish last season.
