Minimum Wage: Australia Leaves Nigeria Behind As It Announces New Minimum Wage for Workers

Australia’s Fair Work Commission has revealed a minimum wage increase to $915.90 per week, a stark contrast to the situation in Nigeria where the Nigerian government is counting its feet and toes in regards to raising the wage for its workers.

According to the Australian government, the minimum wage increase will take effect as from July 1, 2024.

This increase makes it a 3.75% rise in the National Minimum Wage, summing up a rise to $24.10 per hour.

It is the belief of the Australian government that the slight adjustment will strengthen the economy compensation amid economic shifts and inflation, benefiting both the local workers and international work visa applicants.m in the long run.

The last time the Australian government declared a minimum wage increase was in July 2023.

This is a sharp contrast to the predicament in Nigeria where the government and workers under the aegis of organized labour failed to reach an agreement on a new minimum wage after the statutory five years expired in April 2024.

The Nigerian government had proposed a pay N62,000 as the new minimum wage – a 100 percent pay rise when compared to the current N30,000 minimum wage but Nigerian workers had insisted on a N250,000 new minimum wage proposal.

As a result, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu halted the new minimum proposal by its tripartite committee to give room for further talks on the matter.
