The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’s SIS) has dismantled an illegal refining site containing over 100,000 litres of stolen crude oil in Adobi settlement, Etche Local Government, Rivers State. This operation highlights the ongoing efforts to combat crude oil theft and illegal refining activities in the region.
Why It Matters
Illegal oil refining and crude oil theft have significant economic and environmental impacts. They not only deprive the country of valuable resources and revenue but also cause severe environmental pollution. The successful operation by the NSCDC underscores the importance of intelligence and coordinated efforts in tackling these illegal activities. The seizure of such a large quantity of stolen crude oil demonstrates the scale of the problem and the need for continuous vigilance and enforcement.
What They Are Saying
DC Dandaura Appolos, Commander of the CG’s SIS, provided details of the operation, stating that it was based on credible intelligence indicating that suspects had vandalized a multinational company’s well head. They had connected galvanized metal pipes with large hoses to siphon crude oil and process it locally.
“At the crime scene, we discovered reservoirs cemented with trampoline, filled with approximately 100,000 litres of crude oil,” Appolos said. “Exhibits found at the site included a yellow Robin EY 20 pumping machine, galvanized metal pipes, long large hoses, a vandalized well head, reservoirs of stolen crude, calibrated surface tanks, and processed AGO in cooking pots and metal buckets.”
Bottom Line
The dismantling of the illegal refining site in Rivers State by the NSCDC’s Special Intelligence Squad marks a significant achievement in the fight against crude oil theft and illegal refining. This operation not only curtails economic losses but also mitigates environmental damage. Continuous efforts and intelligence-driven operations are crucial in eradicating such illicit activities and safeguarding Nigeria’s resources.
