Ollie Watkins’ Last-Gasp Strike Sends England to Euro 2024 Final Against Spain

England will have a shot at redemption for their UEFA European Championship final heartbreak after a thrilling 2-1 semi-final victory over the Netherlands, courtesy of Ollie Watkins’ sensational stoppage-time strike, setting up a clash with Spain in Berlin.

Aiming to become just the sixth team to reach consecutive Euro finals after their penalty shootout defeat at Wembley three years ago, England took early risks.

However, this aggressive approach backfired as Xavi Simons capitalized on Declan Rice’s mistake, firing a stunning opener into the top corner, igniting the ‘Oranje Muur’ at Westfalenstadion.

Harry Kane, undeterred, tested Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen from distance and earned a penalty after Denzel Dumfries’ high challenge. England’s all-time top scorer coolly converted the spot-kick, surpassing Antoine Griezmann as the top knockout scorer in Euros history, and boosting England’s confidence.

Phil Foden, inspired by Kane’s equalizer, nearly scored himself but saw his effort cleared off the line by Dumfries. The Netherlands threatened as Dumfries hit the bar, and Foden hit the woodwork again with a brilliant strike. Memphis Depay’s injury before halftime added to the Netherlands’ woes, unable to contain England’s dynamic attack.

In the second half, Ronald Koeman adjusted his midfield to stifle England’s control. Virgil van Dijk’s powerful shot tested Jordan Pickford, indicating a shift in momentum. England found themselves under pressure for much of the half but nearly took the lead when Bukayo Saka scored, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.

In the dying moments, Gareth Southgate’s substitutions paid off. Watkins, receiving the ball from Cole Palmer, evaded Stefan de Vrij and fired into the bottom corner, securing England’s place in the final. Southgate’s men, looking rejuvenated, were deserving finalists.

The Netherlands, unable to replicate their 1988 triumph in Germany, were left disappointed. England, with renewed determination, now face Spain in the final, aiming to lift the trophy and banish their past demons.
